lyrics

STAY GOLD
I’ve heard love stories start with a scar
and we one time heroes speak of brighter days, in the back of the bar hey Jenny, remember I once wrote your favorite song?
now we whiskey rivals keep our tales proper tall
of when, neon warriors set our sights by the light of LA burning (from the inside)
aw hell, at least I still got my guitar
I write, “Dear Jenny, I hear you’re doing fine...” dispatch my “goddamn you”s nostalgia comes cheap, just a dime for a lover
that’s why the bluesmen say a pretty girl kills quicker
than a lonely gunfighter with vendetta in his fingertips
so no surprise, fellas born in a trench
know the devil and the taxman keeps the ledger for the best of us
“son, I got a story for you” the bartender whispered as he pointed at an old tattoo and angel inked upon his arm with a banner reading “overcome”
you’re the Fourth of July, and last summer was the wreckage in the road Through the rivers go I, may the waters wash the blood up off my soul
you’re a heart attack - glitter darling - so stay gold
for every true contender, there’s a can for the trash
while the Yankee Clipper was one-of-a-kind, we’re shocked when the ladders collapse and we’re handed a tab and a gun
ain’t no words spoken, bout being burdens when we’re born
and no pretty girl dreams of strutting up and down on the boulevard so before you judge, every drunk is somebody’s son
darling, please spare me your “ain’t it so unfair”s
ignore your mama’s crying bout how she gave you the best of her years
that’s why the bluesmen say a silver tongue burns quicker
than a love amongst the liars with their patent-cure penitence
so no surprise fellas born in the trench,
know the devil and the taxman keep the ledger for the rest of us
“son, I got a story for you” the bartender whispered as he pointed at an old tattoo an angel inked upon his arm with a banner reading “overcome”
CHORUS
just as “home” don’t mean a place “family” is much more than blood hand-in-hand we storm the beaches, soldiers liberating love
so how crude are ill intentions,
while some go out in the cold?
why not let bygones lie with dead dogs and remember to stay gold
so on this particular night, I remember those bartenders’ words and I just want to say I’m sorry and wish you well
with all the love in the world,
stay gold.

The Essex Lights Los Angeles, California

The Essex Lights began not so much as a band, but as a grammatical error. Michael C. Brawer had been performing under the name since the release of his 2010 EP “Action Park & the Indian Summer”, however it was not until the summer of 2011 when guitarist, Grady Axton Davis, and drummer Ben Nelson joined with Brawer in support of their forthcoming LP “Fast Love California” to form a proper band. ... more
